Founded in 1984, the GCM is a unique research center devoted to the study of the physics and technology of the surfaces, interfaces and thin films of advanced materials. It boasts Canada’s largest pool of leading edge equipment for the fabrication, modification and characterization of a wide range of materials and complex systems. Every year, about 370 academic and industrial users benefit from GCM facilities. The mission of the GCM facilities is threefold :
- Develop knowledge in science and technology
- Train highly qualified personnel (students and research professionals)
- Contribute to Quebec’s economic development, by making its expertise and instruments available to academia, government and industry
- Analytical services
- Thin film deposition
- Prototyping of micro/nanosystems
The GCM comprises 27 professors from the University of Montreal’s Physics and Chemistry Departments, as well as from the Ecole Polytechnique’s Engineering Physics Department. They supervise approximately 165 students, postdoctoral fellows and research associates who carry out research in one of the three main thrusts of the GCM :
- Microelectronics and nanoelectronics
- Photonics and optoelectronics
- Functional coatings and surface engineering
