Contact angle measurements

Description

When a liquid drop is placed on a solid surface, the contact angle varies with the interaction among three interfaces: air, liquid and solid. A large attraction between the surface and the liquid translates into a small contact angle between the surface and the liquid; the drop is in that case spread on the surface. A weak attraction is associated with a high contact angle, approaching at times 180°. The nature of the substances determines the contact angle, which is used to quantify the damping properties of inks with certain substrates, to study the adsorption of dyes and inks on paper or certain fabrics, to optimize adhesion properties, etc.

Uses

  • Static and dynamic contact angle measurements
  • Surface energy measurement
