Microscratch Testing

Description

This test is used to study the mechanical properties of a coating such as scratch resistance, adhesion and toughness. In this technique, a linear scratch is made on the sample with a diamond or tungsten carbide stylus, on which is applied a constant or increasing force. This instrument can also perform tribology measurements by allowing the stylus to make several movements back and forth on the sample. The coating begins to deteriorate at a force called critical load.

Uses

  • Measure scratch resistance
  • Analyse adhesion
  • Measure microhardness
  • Measure toughness
