Description
A plasmon is the quantized oscillation of an electron gas. A surface plasmon can propagate at the interface of a metal and a dielectric medium without losses. At the surface of the material under study, the surface plasmon is an evanescent wave whose amplitude decreases exponentially with the distance to the interface. The modification of the phase and the amplitude of the plasmon provides information on the material such as the optical thickness.
